Travel to Mexico can be very rewarding and convenient due to its proximity to the United States. Certainly, Cancun is very accessible from the Eastern U.S. (although we did travel there from the West Coast last Christmas) and the Pacific Coast of Mexico from the American West and Southwest.
Linda and I, traveled from our Reno home to Puerta Vallarta for a mid-winter getaway in early March. We met two of our Reno friends and two of their Tucson friends, for a week of relaxation, great food, excellent adult beverages, sun and surf. We succeeded in all categories!
Our venue, a true hideaway about 35 minutes’ drive north of the Puerta Vallarta (PV) Airport, would be Casita Mia de Mita. We were greeted at Puerto Vallarta International Airport by our driver (Miguel) who had been dispatched by Mauricio, our concierge, host and manager of Casita Mia de Mita.
The drive from PV was mostly highway for the first 35 minutes but the last 5 minutes were along a dirt or gravel ‘rustic’ road that runs parallel to the coast (Baha Banderas) below Punta Mita. Frankly, we were a bit concerned by the exterior surroundings and the unimposing front of the hotel. However, once the doors opened and we were greeted by the staff, those concerns melted away and we felt like we were entering fantasy island.
Casita Mia de Mita, established in 2001, is an all-inclusive oceanfront boutique hotel with a mere 6 guest rooms and 2 penthouse suites and maximum occupancy of 16 adults located Punta de Mita, Mexico (Bill Gates owns the nearby Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita).
Casita Mia is tucked in along Playa Careyeros on the tranquil Mexican Riviera Nayarit. This exclusive resort offers breathtakingly blue waters and white-sand in a secluded environment.
All eight suites at the Casita Mia face the Pacific Ocean and offer full ensuite amenities, including balconies, refrigerators with minibar, snacks and rooms are refreshed a few times each day. Real luxury service.
After visiting our room to freshen up, our luggage was already there, we ventured down to the large patio to find numerous tables and our four friends enjoying a libation as they awaited our arrival. We ordered a couple of drinks and joined them to share our travel experiences. Fortunately, none of us had any negative issues to report and we all entered the vacation mode for the next seven days.
You might ask what we do in vacation mode for seven days. It depends upon the type of vacation. Some are meant for exploration where each day is planned to maximize the discoveries in the surrounding locale. Others are meant for adventures like skiing or hiking. This was a beach and pool relaxation vacation. For us that means slow mornings, coffee and breakfast, reading around the pool, a long beach walk, a late lunch, more lounging with a book and a drink at the swim-up bar. It might also include a second beach walk and an afternoon nap. Later, around 7pm, rally with the group for a glorious sunset dinner al fresco.
The dining at Casita Mia de Mita is always elegant and always delicious. Well separated from any high occupancy properties the nearly mile long beach is deserted except for a few beach walkers. This situation adds to the romance and exclusiveness one feels during these 2–3-hour dinners, with the backdrop of a sunset-lit Pacific Ocean, and tranquil breakfasts and lunches. The Casita has an impressive wine list of Mexican Wines and a few American wines. We drank a nice array of Mexican Cabernet Sauvignon from Baha and Guadalajara. Our favorite was Casa Madero whose vineyards are in the Mexican State of Coahuila. Their website claims it is the oldest winery in America, established in 1597. We thought the Cabernet Sauvignon was quite impressive.
The Casita Mia has a very unique Tequila Bar. We scheduled a tasting (no additional charge) and thoroughly enjoyed the flavor variations among the 5-6 tequilas we were invited to experience.
The menus for lunch and dinner change daily to showcase the freshest local ingredients and colorful fruits. If there is nothing you prefer on the listed menu (highly unlikely), not to worry, as the chef will provide something delicious at your request. Similar to a cruise ship, your dining time is flexible enough to accommodate your activities and schedule. If that isn’t enough, during certain times of the year, you can see the spouting and breaching of humpback whales migrating north and south. We were there in March and the parade, at times, was impressive.
Have we mentioned the service? The staff is fully dedicated to meet your every need, in fact, they serve needs you might not of even know you had. Truly 5-star service! In addition to the service associated with dining and beverages, the Casita Mia offers the services of a skilled masseuse and professional cosmetologist for scheduled facials, manicures, and pedicures.
The pool and swim up bar are sized perfectly for the intimate experiences we prefer. Large enough for floating around with a book or a beverage in your hand. The sunken inside bar area offers an escape from the elements (rain or sun) and a great opportunity to engage with the staff who continuously look after your every need. After the first day you feel like family.
We are quite happy with relaxing, reading and walking the beach but if you desire more action, there are several award-winning golf courses nearby. Additionally, you can get surfing lessons, rent boards or arrange near-coastal and deep-sea fishing excursions.
We think the Casita Mia is an amazing venue for a romantic wedding, a blissful honeymoon, an inspiring corporate retreat, a cozy babymoon, a small family reunion or a weekend filled with celebration. As the Casita Mia is normally adults only, a group or family would need to reserve the entire property, if children would be in attendance.
We highly recommend Casita Mia de Mita. The weather during our early March visit was a bit cooler than we expected with temperatures averaging ~70°F an a steady on shore breeze. Of course, the Casita offered beautiful blanks and shawls for any who requested them.
Once you experience this amazing sense of intimate luxury, you’ll be sure to make it a recurring ‘adventure in relaxation’.
